Taking proactive steps to become more energy efficient, South African water utility ERWAT is installing WEG IE3 top premium efficiency and WEG IE4 super premium efficiency motors from Zest WEG. The motors – from WEG’s popular W22 range – will assist in reducing the impact of rising electricity costs and lower the total cost of ownership.

Further extending Zest WEG’s local manufacture of electrical equipment for mining and other sectors, a new assembly line for low voltage (LV) motors has been established. The facility is part of Zest WEG’s corporate premises at Longlake, east of Johannesburg. According to CEO Eduardo Werninghaus, the new line enhances operational flexibility and reduces lead times to customers.
Most of Zest WEG’s product offering will be on display at the upcoming Electra Mining Africa 2022 exhibition with the company’s theme being how to change energy into solutions. In addition to the range of WEG IE4-rated super-premium efficiency electric motors, Zest WEG will also showcase its high-tech solutions showing how far WEG has progressed on its digital journey.
One of the largest High Intensity Grinding (HIG) mills in the southern hemisphere is being powered using an E-House solution from Zest WEG, built to the highest safety and performance standards. Zest WEG senior proposals manager Tyrone Willemse highlights the E-House solution, constructed locally with a range of components -also produced and distributed by Zest WEG, must meet the aggressive torque requirements of the application.
The efficiency of electric motors has a key role to play in reducing users’ running costs, and in helping meet South Africa’s climate change goals. But with no local regulations in place to push this agenda, there needs to be more understanding among motor users about how their bottom lines can quickly benefit from shifting to IE3, IE4 and even IE5 electric motors, according to Zest WEG.
The project to expand a wastewater treatment plant south of Johannesburg, undertaken by water purification specialist PCI Africa, has included the installation of 65 WEG motors to ensure optimal performance, reliability and energy efficiency.
Now one of the world’s highest-grade copper mines, Kamoa-Kakula in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is installing a wide range of WEG motors and variable speed drives (VSDs) for the second phase of its development.
